If you’ve been using ChatGPT for a while, you already know it’s excellent at text: brainstorming headlines, drafting emails, summarizing documents, and more.
But recently, it got a serious upgrade, one that’s visual.
ChatGPT now generates images, and they’re surprisingly good. They're not stock-photo cheesy, stiff, or over-styled. They're good, as in "wow-this-could-go-on-my-Substack."
The one above is of me as a cartoon character. I uploaded a photo of myself and asked for a cartoon version, and within a couple of minutes, it gave me this image, which is cute, but so what?
It’s Not Just About Pretty Pictures
This isn’t just about making things look nice or cute, a good graphic can make people click. In the past few weeks, I’ve collaborated with ChatGPT to create graphics, and I've been impressed.
The most significant improvement is that it gets the text right. Before this upgrade, most AI graphics messed up the text. I sent this graphic to a friend because it made me laugh out loud.
As you can see, ChatGPT has come a long way. And here’s the best part: I don’t need design software or a stock photo subscription to make these graphics.
Canva makes things easier, but not as easy as this.
Now, I can describe the image I want, tweak it in real time, and have a graphic that aligns with my message and imagination.
For example, I wanted an image to accompany my blog on prioritizing outcomes over novelty in AI. So, I asked ChatGPT to create a split-screen: one button labeled “Play,” one labeled “Implement.” Then, I added a caption: “Innovation is easy. Implementation is the challenge, and the opportunity.” These were not it for me. For some reason, these graphics reminded me of the 1980s. It was not what I wanted.
Why This Upgrade Matters for Marketers
We’re all creating content, whether it's for newsletters, client decks, websites, webinars, or social media. And the truth is, visuals are often the bottleneck. They’re time-consuming if you make them yourself. They’re expensive if you hire someone.
Then I got a little more playful, designing LEGO-style vintage computers to underscore the idea of AI as a “toy.” I'm thrilled as someone who writes a lot but doesn’t always love spending hours searching for or creating (on Canva) the image I want. I may use this one, but it’s a little busy. A work in progress….
After all that experimentation, I needed the perfect graphic for an endorsement from an audience member who attended my presentation on AI Tools. I uploaded her photo from LinkedIn, grabbed the endorsement, and ChatGPT did the rest! It’s going on my website as is. This was truly amazing! I hardly did anything here and got the perfect graphic.
This Is Still the Beginning
Is ChatGPT perfect? No. Is it better than humans? Absolutely not. I believe that imagination comes first, tools second. It is a collaboration. But this upgrade to ChatGPT is a big help for someone like me who has the ideas but not the talent or skills to create the graphics. This upgrade saves me time, reduces decision fatigue, and brings a little joy into my process.
