10 Ways to AI Proof Your Author Website
Discoverability is changing. Here’s how to stay visible in AI search
I’m doing a listicle like it’s the mid 2010s :)
We all know search and discoverabilty has changed since AI search became popular. Reports from 2024 and 2025 show measurable declines in organic search traffic as more users rely on AI-generated answers rather than clicking traditional search results. SparkToro founder Rand Fishkin reported that nearly 60 percent of Google searches now end without a click. He famously coined the phrase “zero-click search.” That means people are getting their answers directly on the search page, not going down Google rabbit holes of links.
To ensure our websites and books appear in AI search results, we need to provide structured, consistent, trustworthy information.
If your site clearly explains who you are, what you write, and who you serve, you are much more likely to be referenced in AI-generated responses.
If your messaging is vague, overly clever, or buried under design elements, you may not appear in AI search results. It will take a minute for us to understand what it means to design websites for AI rather than humans. Topic for another day.
The good news is that there are simple things we can do; I am working on these on my own websites.
1. Explain Who You Are
Right on your homepage, say it plainly. I am a business book author focused on leadership in healthcare. I write historical fiction set in 19th-century India.
I help parents understand ADHD through research-backed guidance.
Clear (even boring) beats clever.
2. Create a Strong, Detailed Bio Page
Your bio should include:
Your full name (make sure your name is consistent everywhere. Use a middle initial everywhere or nowhere)
Your areas of expertise
Book titles
Awards or credentials
Media features
Speaking topics
Think of this page as your structured identity. It helps AI tools describe you confidently.
3. Add an FAQ Page (remember those)
AI systems love question-and-answer formatting. Create a page that answers:
Who is [Your Name]?
What books has [Your Name] written?
What is [Book Title] about?
Who should read it?
What topics does [Your Name] speak on?
Consider the questions people ask about you and make sure you answer them. No guesswork required.
4. Use Plain, Specific Language
If your homepage says: “I empower transformational journeys through narrative alchemy.” It sounds poetic. But it is unclear. AI would prefer: “I write self-help books for women rebuilding their lives after divorce.”
5. Keep Your Site Updated
Fresh blog posts, current events, and recent media appearances demonstrate your recent activity. This has always been true: if you don’t update your websites, you won't appear in search results.
6. Add Schema Markup
I know "schema" is probably a new term for you, but you will start hearing it more.
I asked ChatGPT to explain: “Schema is a type of code added behind the scenes of your website that labels your content for search engines and AI systems.”
From what I understand, it’s like SEO, but instead of keywords, you clearly explain: This is a book. This is an author. This is a podcast interview. This is an event.
I need to do more research on this. I am still learning about it.
7. Organize Content Around Core Topics
Create tags for your blogs or content so they show up together to create a resource page. I seriously need to do this.
For example:
A page dedicated to Leadership in Healthcare
A resource hub for Trauma Recovery
A guide to Writing Historical Fiction
Link related posts together and resources together. This shows depth and authority.
8. Make Sure Important Information is in Text
Avoid placing key information inside images or downloadable PDFs. This has been true for a long time. AI tools (and search engines, too) read text. If your book description is embedded in a graphic, it may not be indexed.
9. Earn Credible Mentions
After all the layoffs in the media, you would think media mentions are not important. The opposite is true. Media features, podcast interviews, university mentions, and reviews in reputable publications strengthen your authority. This has always mattered. Now it matters even more.
10. Test It Yourself
Remember when we Googled ourselves. Now there is a new sheriff in town. You need to search for yourself on AI tools. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to describe you and your work, and see how you show up. I really enjoy searching myself on Perplexity. It’s like having a cheerleader on your side. Try it. You’ll see what I mean.
AI search rewards clarity, structure, and expertise. Those are all things authors already have. We just need to present them more clearly for AI search.
